A drum ROLL please!

For the first time ever I successfully did multiple roll casts today on the stretch of river below. This will open up more opportunities for me along this section of the Shawsheen River and other rivers in the area. I watched a youtube video and the guy explained the concept simply and the video was dramatic.

As you can see there is very little space but I was told this is a productive area (although I haven't caught anything here yet). I was able to put the line were I was aiming about 50% of the time . The other 50% was a tangled line, unsuccessful cast to the area, etc.

I also got a book from the library today about rivers in Southern New England. There are about three in Western MA (about 2 hours)  that I want to get to during the summer. There are another three or four within an hour of my house that I plan on getting to very soon. The book gives directions to some of the better places and some overlooked locations.

  1. That is really pretty water. Just my opinion, but sounds like a good time to just relax and do it. Don't consider it practice...it's fly fishing and you're a fly fisherman, out to enjoy a day on the water. Skill level be damned. Go catch some fish and have fun.

  3. Hey Howard....would you believe that this runs through a neighborhood? You are right: just have fun and try and catch some fish. I really did have fun today learning how to roll cast. I am going to try to get some time in tomorrow morning.

Erin....I always get books from the library. I am sure that the DVD will help. I was pleased with a 50% success rate for my first time. Little by little I am getting there.

  4. Awesome blog, and a great post. 50/50 is great at the start, it took me years before I could get almost every roll cast where I wanted it. Tangled lines is just good practice for untangling lines. Anyhow, you've got a new follower

  5. Hi Justin....thank you very much for the very kind words. Also, thank you for the follow. I stopped by your blog and I'll be following it later today.

For those of you who read this blog but don't follow the blog I need one more person to hit 25! As the Men At Work sang "Who will it be now"!

  6. There are only a couple places here in NM that you can make normal casts. It's like the school of hard knocks down here. There is this aussie guy that has a dvd and uses spey techniques. I think it would be a good dvd to pick up. At the least it will get you into the feel and physics of your rod.

  7. Thanks BCFN. I watched a guy from New Zealand on YouTube and he was really good at explaining the basics. I'll keep an eye out for the other DVD.

By the way, the "school of hard knocks" lessons are the best because they are usually not forgotten.
