Some new developments......

First things first......Shortly after I finish this post I am heading to the The Fly Fishing Show that is being held in MA. I will try to capture the essence of the show with some pictures.

As for the new developments, it seems like there are some changes coming at work that there will be no avoiding and as my father use to say: Batten down the hatches until the storm passes (yes he was in the United States Navy).

Once the sun breaks through the storm clouds I am going to be covering a new area and NYC will be in the rear-view mirror. While I love going to NYC my new territory will include VT and western MA where there are some world class fly-fishing streams (Batten Kill & White River in VT and the Connecticut River, Housatonic River & the Deerfield River in western MA). I have wanted to fish these rivers ever since I started fly-fishing but have never been able to find the time; however, my job will bring me to these lovely destinations and my fly-fishing gear will always be in the car now.

In addition, my interest in saltwater fly-fishing has increased exponentially. It started with reading an article about fishing down the Cape by the MA Maritime Academy in Trout Magazine and that lead me to a book called Fly Fishing Boston. Fly Fishing Boston piqued my interest in a place I thought I knew: Boston Harbor. I found a book titled Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands by Christopher Klein (the book was used by the producers of  the movie Shutter Island for historical accuracy). This reading lead me to The Fisherman's Ocean by David A. Ross that I am currently (get it currently) reading. Dr. Ross is a scientist emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution down the Cape. The book teaches you marine science in order to find and catch more fish. Although the content is scientific in nature Dr. Ross' explanations are easy to understand.

Lastly, I believe I am going to buy a used, small (~17' to 18') Boston Whaler to explore the Boston Harbor, Cape Ann (Boston's North Shore) and the South Shore (you guessed it Boston's south shore) coastlines. One of the guys in the office next to me is a bass tournament fisherman and he told me yesterday that I could get a nice used boat and do everything I wanted with respect to fishing the harbor and coastline.

I am hoping that there is enough time to do all these things but I am guessing there won't..................off to the show.

  1. Boston Harbor, isn't there where they dumped all that tea a while ago? Just kidding. Wow, a man after my own heart. Do a little business and then take off early and go fishing. From the jist of what you're saying it probably won't work for you, but I hope at least some.

  2. Hi Mark.....thank God that they did start the Boston Tea Party because who knows what would have happened if they didn't.

I know that I put a lot out there and I hope to make it come true. The key I believe is not to get distracted so I will have to keep the list on my bulletin board to keep me focused.

    Thanks.

  4. Hi Howard.......yes there is a lot ahead of me but I like it that way.

As for the show, it was my second time going and I enjoyed it more than the first time. I bought some flies, signed some petitions and scouted a new club to join (The New England Flyrodders---they do salt water fly-fishing primarily).

    Thanks.

  5. Whaler makes a good hull and you should have no problem catching fish and clams out of one. Western MA, and VT do hold some great fishing water, and i wish I had more time to get up there and fish. I feel so locked down her in the NYC area. Good luck riding out the storm and fishing your new territory.

  6. Hi Ed,
I didn't make it to the show again. I have heard the show keeps getting smaller each year.

You have quite a lot on your plate. I think you are a in a great location for saltwater fly fishing. It is a but more a of drive for me to get to the shore.

    1. Hi Mike....this was only my second time there and the last time was two years ago so I really can't compare the two. There were a lot of people and I saw license plates from every New England state, NY and PA.

I did stay longer this time (nearly 90 minutes)and bought some flies.

Once the weather gets nice and you can stay after work we could head up to Plum Island (~40 minutes from Andover) and do some fishing on the Joppa Flats or Plum Island itself.

  7. Are you talking fishing from shore? That would be fun...I haven't gotten any lines wet this year...but I am chopping at the bit.
