Tangled up in Knots

As the time gets closer to actually stop writing, talking and reading about fly-fishing and actually do some fly-fishing I have a question about knots. I am actually going to start practicing tonight.

I have seen that there are at least three different ways to attach the fly to the tippet (i.e. knot close to the eye of the hook, the knot less tight and last but not least the knot fairly "loose").

It stated that different circumstances call for different knots.

So as a beginner which should I consider and why?

  1. For attaching my fly to the tippet I like something nice and basic like the improved cinch knot. I have read about using a loop knot for streamers. This gives them more action much like you would do with a rapala using a large snap or loop knot. For this I use a uni knot.

  2. Thanks Mike. I hadn't heard of a cinch knot so I did a Google search. The first hit was this animated knot site.
It shows you how to tie all types of different knots.
    Here is the website: http://www.animatedknots.com

  3. Hi, Ed, thanks for the follow over on my blog. I have added you to my Blogroll as well. Animated Knots website is about as good as it gets in my opinion for learning which knots to use and when to use them. Been a favorite of mine for awhile.

  4. Thanks Howard for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Thanks Mel for the follow. Sometimes the illustrations in magazines or books are hard to follow because there is no contrast. The Animated Knots site lets you slow down the animation or watch it slide by slide.

  5. Mike C is spot on. The uni knot is good for subsurface, it helps to avoid the dreaded "micro-drag." That ever so slight drag that isn't visible to us mere mortals but is apparently a glaring inconsistency to fish.
