Wading into fly-fishing deeper..........

I buy a lot of my shirts from LL Bean and one of them frayed along the sleeve the other day so I returned it this morning at the local store. As usual, they were nice and gave me a gift card for the shirt's value.

As I was walking out of the store and back to my car, I passed the fly-fishing section so I figured I would poke about. I needed a new leader and thought I could pick one up while I was there.

As it turned out, they had LL Bean waders on sale for $69 (marked down from $109). I did the math quickly and decided that with the gift card I was going to finally get those long desired waders. I found the person who was working the fly-fishing section and asked for my size and tried them on in the dressing room. They fit and I decided to buy them before I had second thoughts. I picked up a package of leaders and I was off to the register.

They may not be the greatest but it gets me that much deeper (pun intended) into fly-fishing. My birthday is coming up and if I don't buy a pair of boots beforehand to go along with the waders, then I will ask my wife to get them for me as a gift (the more expensive ones of course).

I practiced my double surgeon knot and improved clinch knot during the day so I can do these without thinking before the state stocks the waters around here.

I am really still a newbie and have much to learn.

  1. It's a wonderful path your on Ed. I started fly fishing some 38 years ago and if I can give you just one tip it's this.

Always buy the best you can afford, but remember you don't need much of it! The less you can have between you and the fish, the better.

I really envy your journey, mine is coming to an end.

    Best wishes.

  2. Thanks for the advice Richard and keeping tabs on my journey. I will buy (or ask as a gift) good boots. The waders are by LL Bean so they aren't poor quality just not the most expensive.

I am still a little concerned about stepping into rivers but I will observe others beforehand to see where it is safe.

As for your journey, it sounds like you enjoyed it and I hope you will pass along some of your experience at this blog. We are all kidding ourselves if we think we know when it ends. Go down swinging to the very end!

Thanks again for following along and your advice because it is very much appreciated.

  3. Hi Ed,
You can always get good stuff cheap at ll bean...assuming they have your size. Good find.

  4. Hi Mike,
I was pleased with the waders. I also found an ORVIS outlet in Kittery Maine so I will be checking that place out on my monthly trips to Maine. Going to the DCU show this week?
